How Bleecker Street's CEO Learned to Get Out of His Own Way — and Made $10 Million Doing It
Kent Sanderson had never heard of Stray Kids. He had no particular feeling about Broadway musicals. And yet, under his watch, Bleecker Street just posted the biggest opening weekend in the company's history — $10.25 million domestic for "Hadestown: The Musical," a filmed stage feature released through the distributor's event-cinema label, Crosswalk.
The top-grossing theater was in Orlando, Florida. "By a wide margin," Sanderson said.
The result is a meaningful data point for specialized distributors navigating a landscape where passion-driven audiences — theater kids, K-pop stans, cult-film obsessives — can move money in ways that traditional prestige acquisitions increasingly cannot. Bleecker's Crosswalk label has been quietly building a track record here. In January 2026, it released "Stray Kids: The dominATE Experience," which had been the company's biggest box-office win of the year before "Hadestown" came along. Before that, in 2023, Bleecker distributed the "Waitress: The Musical" live-capture film — a deal that the company's late founder, Andrew Karpen, had identified as an opportunity.
Sanderson admits he didn't understand the "Waitress" fan base until a friend casually mentioned he'd seen the show four times. "You saw a single Broadway musical four times?" Sanderson recalled thinking. The penny dropped. "'Waitress' and 'Hadestown' share that," he said.
"Hadestown" has the kind of origin story that generates devotion. Anaïs Mitchell wrote the book, music, and lyrics; the show was first performed in 2006, became a concept album, and eventually moved to Broadway, where it won eight Tony Awards. That's a long runway of audience attachment before a single cinema ticket gets sold.
Still, Sanderson wasn't certain the Spotify streaming numbers for the cast recording meant what they appeared to mean. "Is a Spotify stream a false flag because people think of this as an album? I didn't quite know what to make of it," he said. So Bleecker ran the data through YouGov polling and whatever other research they could get their hands on. The methodology, as Sanderson describes it, is less a formula than a discipline of humility. "It's literally just knowing what you don't know, and finding whatever research you can."
He's direct about what that requires on a personal level. When it was put to him that the whole approach sounds like a matter of ego, he didn't push back. "Yeah, it is taking your ego out of it. That's literally the thesis of this entire business, is taking myself out of it. Taking the taste of my acquisitions team out of it, and really just meeting the audience where they are."
Not every bet lands. Bleecker handled the 41st anniversary releases of "This Is Spinal Tap" and "Spinal Tap II: The End Continues" in 2025, and the combined domestic total came in around $3.6 million — a result that speaks for itself.
Sanderson went to film school, and that side of his identity hasn't disappeared. Bleecker is planning to release Mike Leigh's "Tender Loving Care" later in 2026, though Sanderson is clear-eyed about what that release looks like. "It's not going to be like, 'Be there for Mike week one nationwide,'" he said. "That's a much more traditional art house rollout."
The event-cinema work, though, is something he's genuinely bought into — including the content itself. He mentioned watching an hour of "Hadestown" the night before the interview, not for work reasons. "I've come to love 'Hadestown,'" he said. "I watched an hour of it last night just because I've grown attached."
For a CEO who built a record-breaking release around setting his own taste aside, that might be the most interesting detail of all.
